Lunacy is played on a 27ft x 54ft field.Lunacy is played by 2 alliances of 3 teams each.The 2009 season has been dubbed "Lunacy," and rightly so. "Lunacy" is madness, derivative of the French word "lune," which means moon. To commemorate NASA's 40th anniversary of landing the first man on the moon, "Lunacy" is designed to simulate the one-sixth of Earth's gravity environment of the moon. Equipped with slippery wheels and a trailer, the robots move around in order to collect "Orbit Balls," which come in three categories; moon rocks and empty cells, worth two points; and super cells, worth 15 points. Robots are grouped in alliances of three to dump as many "Orbit Balls" into their competitor's trailers as possible.This year's game is interactive. Along with two drivers, human players are stationed around the arena to score and trade in empty cells for super cells. The robots are in autonomous mode for the first 15 seconds of the match. The remaining two minutes are player-controlled. Points are tallied by the amount of balls in the competitor's trailers.The trailers begin empty, but team members may load their robot with up to seven moon rocks before the match begins. Human players have 20 moon rocks available for scoring, including the seven in the robot. The quantity of super cells and empty cells depends on the outcome of the team's previous match. In the initial match the team starts off with four empty cells and two super cells.

Robot Description

This year's challenge is completely new and more innovative than in previous years. With the new game field surface being very low friction, new problems can arise. The objective of this year's game is to get as many "Orbit Balls" (moon rocks, empty cells and super cells) as possible into the trailer that the opposing teams are towing. At the end of the two-minute match, the alliance with the most points will win.

First priority for the Knights is to design and build a lightweight frame out of aluminum extrusion, which provides support for the robot's attachments. This year, the traditional hockey sticks are used as attachment supports.

The Kinetic Knights designed various conveyors and shooters to adapt to this year's game. We start with a dual infeed conveyor system that stores the game balls in a see-through hopper that contains a maximum of 24 "Orbit Balls". An elevating conveyor transports stored balls to a high-speed shooter, which throws the game balls into opposing alliances' trailers.Team 781 believes that the most innovative component of this year's robot is the drive system. For the first year, the Knights will be using four-wheel steering. This, in combination with crab-drive style option (all four wheels turning in the same direction), gives the robot greater manoeuvrability than ever before, including the ability to move sideways. In what we believe is unique to a four-wheel steering system, the robot has only one gearbox driving all four wheels. Instead of using turning drive modules, the robot will press driven rollers against the wheels, allowing the motors and gearbox to be fixed to the frame.
